City Employee Misunderstands Purpose of Government

January 3, 2010
by Dave Lambert

A Troy City government employee posted the following message on Twitter today:

It also baffles me that the people I work to serve would suggest the city cut employees (such as myself) before approving a tax increase.

I truly admire and appreciate public servants. However, government does not exist to employ people. I believe its primary purpose is to protect life, liberty, and property. In some limited cases, government can also play a role in creating conditions that maintain civilization (e.g., education) or community cohesiveness (e.g., historical assets).

good answer back Dave, I agree with you. we all are taking cuts even
social security so tell the city employees that raises, etc come with
how well you preform on the job. Teachers should be done the same way.

Great commentary. I’m sorry but the government class has taken advantage of the homeowners for too long. We’ve suffered pay cuts, it is about time they get a haircut too.
