Troy City Election 2009 Review – Part 2

November 6, 2009
by Dave Lambert

First, belated congratulations to Maureen M. McGinnis, Dane Slater, and Wade Fleming.

Second, the biggest surprise of the election was the strong win by Maureen M. McGinnis. She was approximately 1,300 votes ahead of the 2nd place finish of Dane Slater. Some might guess that her large victory margin was due to the fact that she is a woman. However, if that were the reason, why did Carmen Johnson finish in 6th place behind four other men? I believe that her victory margin was due to the fact that voters saw her as a non-politician. Other than one campaign flyer that pictured her with Brooks Patterson, she steered away from being identified with any other politicians.

Third, I think this election demonstrates that running as a slate may save campaign dollars but it doesn’t ensure victory. Running as a slate may work if there’s a hot local issue like the I-75/Long Lake Exit controversy. This year’s Troy City election lacked such a defining issue that had all of the candidates standing on one side or the other.

What do you think? Post your comments and/or opinion.

Sorry, but I don’t think it was because she ran alone, she didn’t – she was on Schilling’s slate with Slater. She had big backers behing her — look at all the commercials she ran. She is using this as a stepping stone to run for Judge. I just wonder who she wants to run against. Sorry, she didn’t inpress me. The only person I thought worth giving a vote to was Doug Tietz and he didn’t make it because he hasn’t lived here as long as the old old group of council people. They missed out on a good council person. But, like a bad penny, he will be back to be the good penny. You still have four votes in my household Doug, keep up the good work.

There WAS a big issue this year and it was the city services and the quality of life that they provide. The fact that McGinnis and Slater won shows the true feeling of the city. They value their quality of life in Troy. To the other posters:

    1) McGinnis and Slater were not part of a slate – they ran on their own merits and integrity, unlike the slate of 3. Also, didn’t the slate of 3 run together to throw more money into the campaign?

    2) McGinnis and Slater are both very impressive. The Troy Leadership Coalition and the League of Women Voters, along with other public events showed that.

    3) While Doug Tietz may be a nice guy, he was misinformed on local issues. This may be due to the fact of his short residence in the city, but if you are running for City Council, you should be aware of facts that specifically impacted the city’s finances and when those events took place, i.e., the recent charter amendment. It takes more than turning a “bad penny” into a good one to be a qualified leader.

Also, I would like to point out a major difference in the campaigns of the slate of 3 and the other candidates. McGinnis, Slater and Molnar ran a ‘CLEAN” campaign! They did not have to resort to smear tactics to win their seats. If you are concerned about spending money on a campaign, maybe you should address this deliberate attack on the opposition.

Also, it is really sad that the supporters of the slate of 3 had to demean and attack the election of these two fine candidates, by posting negative comments on their website and summarizing this as “a sad day for Troy.” Did you ever think that maybe, JUST MAYBE, you could stand by those that did get elected? Does this mean that your lone candidate also shares these views?

Again, the public has spoken! Let’s get off of this negative mind set and work together to continue to keep Troy the City of Tomorrow, Today.

I am proud to have McGinnis and Slater on our City Council. They showed their true leadership qualifications and I look forward to their contributions to this fine city.

The 2009 election was a strange one to me, especially since I was looking in as an “outsider” for the first time in many years.

As I’ve stated in earlier comments, I was not a big supporter of the “Tax Fighter” ticket. Their solutions and slogans were just too simplistic in a moment where complex issues are prevalent. And, a candidate – or a slate of candidates – can only go to that well a few times before the message just gets stale.

I’ve always liked former Captain Slater. He’s a stand-up guy, one I really admire and I am grateful he prevailed.

I didn’t know much about Maureen McGinnis, except that her hacked-up tv commercials offended the video editor in me. Perhaps name recognition helped her somewhat.

Finally, here’s the strangest thing about this election: during the last few election cycles, I’ve lamented the lack of attention given to the west side of Troy, particularly the portion that has the Birmingham School District. This year, it was even worse: I got NO campaign literature except for the city’s explanation of the charter amendments. None other than that. And I only noticed one candidate walking my particular street: Will Molnar.

I didn’t realize McGinnis had TV commercials. We have AT&T Uverse so I guess we miss out on commercials made for cable TV. I wonder if that also helped her margin of victory? It seemed liked most of the candidates failed to really utilize the web.

I have WOW, and they were place all over since the beginning of October, I’d say. Fox News, FX, Bravo, TNT.

Many people don’t realize how inexpensive local cable advertising can be, especially during non-peak times and networks – and it’s not necessarily 2 am.

A few years ago, I did a commercial for Sanctuary Lake Golf Course to show on Comcast and TNT during the Masters golf tournament. It aired about 10 times.
