April 29, 2008

These summaries are meant to provide general highlights of items of interest and do not necessarily reflect every incident responded to. Investigations of a nature or at a juncture where publicity may impair the outcome of a case are not generally listed.

Complainant came to the station to report receiving a tax notice from the IRS indicating he owed taxes on $8604.00 in unreported income.  He was advised his social security number had been used at a company in Tennessee.  When he attempted to locate the company, he could not.  08-14556

Somerset Collection, 2800 W. Big Beaver, 4/24
Complainant came to the station to report he either lost or had his wallet stolen while shopping.  When he checked with his credit card companies, he discovered two had been used to make fraudulent purchases in Troy and Sterling Heights.  08-14508

Complainant from Troy reported discovering an overdue/fraudulent phone account opened/billed to an address in Dallas in his name; unpaid amount is $429.66.  08-14737

Complainant reported that while reviewing bank statement on-line, complainant discovered a fraudulent airline purchase made using complainant’s credit account information for a round trip flight from Dallas to Chicago.  Complainant was able to cancel the return trip portion of the purchase.

Complainant reported ex-wife of his client forged client’s name to open a fraudulent credit account and made $1000.00 in purchases.  08-14534

Domestics/Family Troubles:

Troy Officers responded to four incidents involving family troubles/domestic disputes where investigation revealed no assaults or other crimes occurred, therefore no formal enforcement action was taken.

One possible PPO violation reported wherein complainant stated when she showed her ex-boyfriend a PPO she had obtained against him; he grabbed it and fled the area.

One incident under investigation where the parties accused each other of mutual assault.

Dartmoor, 4/1-4/8
A 21 year old male from Troy reported giving his girlfriend a $170.00 ring.  Apparently when they broke up, she returned it.  She reportedly was at his house since, after which he discovered the ring missing.  08-14734

John R Spring, Maple and Chicago, 4/18, 0130-0448 hrs.
Complainant from New Image Building Services reported parking one of his box vans in the lot for service the next day.  Later in the day, an employee retrieving a clip board from the truck noticed two carpet cleaners missing.  08-14025

Prescot, 4/21, 1700 hrs.
Complainant reported her 17 year old son had a friend over that brought a 15 year old male companion from Troy with him.  After they left, an iPod, digital camera, and $20.00 in cash came up missing.   The officer went to the 15 year old’s home where the youth denied involvement in the theft.  About an hour later, the original victim’s father contacted the officer and advised the 15 year old called them and admitted taking the items.  The youth reportedly stated he sold the items to someone at school and would attempt to get them back; if he couldn’t he stated he’d reimburse them for their losses.  Investigation continues.  08-14472

Hydraulic concrete demolition tool that attaches to a Caterpillar dozer was stolen from a flatbed trailer where it had been chained down.  08-14524

Larcenies from Autos:

Jamaica and Hendrickson, 4/24, 2248 hrs.
An off-duty officer observed two males walking along Jamaica pulling on door handles on cars parked in the street and driveways.  One of the subjects was carrying an object in his hand.  As the officer called Troy dispatch on his cell phone to report the matter, he observed the subjects approach his car, which he had parked while making the phone call.  He exited his vehicle and identified himself as a police officer, at which point both fled on foot.  Responding Troy and Clawson officers located and detained both subjects at Grant and Sheffield.  They were identified as two 17 year old males from Clawson.  Neither had anything in their possession at the time of the stop.  Both had been drinking.  One admitted they had been “car hopping.”  The cars they were observed trying to open were checked and none had any damage; no overt signs any had been entered.  Both were conveyed home.  The next day a loaded .45 handgun, a GPS navigation system, and two packs of gum were found in the grass on Kenyon which is along the path the suspects had run while fleeing from the original officer the night before.  The gun turned out to have been stolen from a car on Hendrickson in Clawson the same night.  Investigation continues.   08-14488

Check Corp, 1800 Stephenson Hwy., 4/25, 0900-1400 hrs.
Catalytic converters stolen from a ’96 Toyota Tacoma and a Chevy Lumina van.  A light brown vehicle, possibly a Chevy Celebrity and an older silver “beat up” vehicle were both described by witnesses as suspicious in the office parking lot.  Both were described as occupied by two males; in one case the passenger was described as out looking at the Chevy Lumina van.  While he was outside, a squealing noise was reported coming front the general vicinity.  08-14547

Malicious Destruction of Property: 

Winter near Dequindre, 4/25, 1900-2359 hrs.
’01 Chevy Monte Carlo parked in street had rear window smashed out with a rock.  08-14641

Rear window smashed out of ’98 Ford Bronco parked in street.  08-14689

Lakewood, 4/25-4/26, 1900-0900 hrs.
Driver’s side and hood keyed on a ’07 Pontiac G5 parked in street.  08-14757

Retail Fraud:  

Rogers and Holland, Oakland Mall, 320 W. 14 Mile, 4/25, 1545 hrs.
Complainant stated a subject entered the store and asked to see a 1 ct. diamond ring, representing it was for his girlfriend who was shopping at Macy’s, but was on her way to join him.  After looking at it, he asked to see a 2 ct/ ring.  Complainant replied she’d have to get authorization from her manager to remove it from the display.  The manager removed and showed the subject a 1.5 ct. ring instead, which the suspect grabbed and ran out of the store with.  Suspect:  B/M, late 20’s to early 30’s, approximately 508, 160 lbs., bald, tattoos on his forearms, wearing blue jeans and a white T-shirt, wearing a diamond cross around his neck.    Total stolen:  $16,000.00. Complainant reported he contacted the Somerset Store and learned the same suspect was at that location prior to the incident at his store.  The suspect was described as sweating profusely at the time he was inside the store.  He asked to see two smaller rings, and then asked to see a 2 ct. diamond.  The clerk there would not remove the 2 ct. ring from the display case. The suspect stated he was going to go and meet up with his girlfriend who was shopping at Macy’s and they would be back.  He left and did not return.

Louis Vuitton, Somerset Collection, 2801 W. Big Beaver, 4/26, 1600-1700 hrs.
Two pair of Louis Vuitton Conspiration 4 sunglasses valued at $530.00 each was discovered missing from a display case.  Investigation revealed a B/M, approximately 30 years, 6-2 to 6-4, athletic build, wearing black denim jeans, with designs on the pockets, multicolor stripped pattern shirt, silver puffy down vest, and sunglasses on top of his head was observed taking the glasses from the display, concealing them, and leaving the store w/out paying.  08-14823

Cook Court, 4/26, 180 hrs.
Troy officers responded with Troy FD to a report of a shed on fire.  The fire was extinguished; preliminary indication was it may have been started in a wood pile that was next to the structure.

Costello Elementary, 1333 Hamman; St. Anastasia Church, 4571 John R; Troy Athens High School, 4333 John R; field 4600 block of Fairmont; 4/27, 0033-0442 hrs.
Troy officers responded along with Troy FD to dumpster fires at Costello Elementary School, St. Anastasia Church, and Troy Athens High School, as well as a grass fire in the rear of the 4600 block of Fairmont during the above time frame.  Firefighters reported smelling gasoline at the Fairmont fire.  In the incident at Costello School, two teens were reported seen running from the dumpster that was burning.  08-14786
