Report on the UDM 2008 State of the Michigan Economy Symposium

Several economic experts throughout Michigan spoke yesterday at the University of Detroit Mercy’s 2008 State of Michigan Economy Symposium at Macomb University Center.

Speakers included:
Joseph A. Weglarz, senior lecturer at UDM
Jamie J. Muter, president of Muter and Associates
Paul M. Veryser, vice president of Precision Metal Working Association
Detroit News Automotive Editor, Manuel Lopez
UDM Economics Professor Donald Byrne

The event was sponsored by the University of Detroit Mercy Economics Department, Macomb University Center, Clinton Township and the Michigan Council on Economic Education.

Listed below are a few of the more interesting statements made at the symposium.

Jamie Muter…
Industrial and office properties in Southeast Michigan have been significantly affected by the bursting of the real estate “bubble.”

Paul M. Veryser…
China is playing a much larger role in U.S. domestic automobile manufacturing.

Manuel Lopez…
Michigan will probably never again be a major player in automobile manufacturing. Instead, our state needs to focus on automobile research and development.
