Athens High Athletic Booster Concession Manager Arrested
From the Troy Police…
February 26, 2008
During the course of an on-going investigation involving reported discrepancies in Troy Athens High School Athletic Booster’s Club funds, Ms. Margaret Ellen Bazin, 46 years old, from Troy has been charged in a three count felony warrant for embezzlement. The specific funds out of which the charges arise involve the Booster Club’s concessions, as well as a Booster Club fund raising event called the “Swim and Jog.”
As a member of the Boosters, Ms. Bazin managed Booster Club sponsored concessions at Athens High School. The concessions are run by the Booster Club with profits going to support that organization’s activities. The investigation determined that Ms. Bazin used concessions account funds to make just over $2000.00 in personal purchases. (Count I) In addition, the investigation revealed that just over $2000.00 in funds that were turned over to Ms. Bazin from the Booster Club to be deposited into the concessions account are missing. (Count II) Ms. Bazin was one of the organizers of a Booster Club fund raiser entitled the “Swim and Jog.” In her capacity with that event, she took in pledge monies from participants. During the course of that event, students and others volunteered their time to jog or swim laps to raise money for the Booster Club, as well as their specific sport. The investigation revealed that she turned in approximately $1800.00 less than what she collected. (Count III)
Each count carries with it up to 5 years in prison and/or a $10,000.00 fine or three times the amount embezzled, whichever is greater.
Ms. Bazin was arrested by Troy officers at her home on Thursday, February 21st . She was arraigned in front of Troy 52-4 District Court Judge Dennis Drury on the 22nd where she appeared with an attorney. She stood mute. She received a $50,000.00 personal bond, with a stipulation that she has no contact with the Troy Athens High Booster Club. Her pre-exam conference is set for March 6th in front of Judge Drury in Troy’s 52-4 District Court at 8:30 a.m. A mug shot is attached.
This investigation is on-going. Anyone with information specific to Ms. Bazin or other relevant information who has not yet spoken with an investigator is asked to contact Troy Detective David Nordstrom at 248-680-7283.
